North Berwick's harbour is believed to date back to 1177, when pilgrims would sail to Elie before travelling onto St. Andrews. They would pray for safe passage at the church on 'Auld Kirk Green' the oldest remaining part of the harbour. In 1868, the harbour was expanded and warehouses constructed to store grain, wool and potatoes, while fishing was an active industry. The harbour once boasted an outdoor swimming pool - closed in 1995, and is home to the Scottish Seabird Centre. It is also a great base for exploring the islands of the Forth.
