A former fishing village and harbour at Musselburgh, the current harbour dates back to the 17th century, although the waters were fished in Roman times. Allegedly, during Cromwell's campaign in 1650, Fisherrow was rejected in favour of Dunbar harbour for his supply ships because it was deemed too shallow. In the 17th and 18th centuries, it was also thought to be unsuitable for foreign trade meaning there was no Customs post and no presence of excise men which seemingly led to a fair amount of smuggling! The harbour is surrounded by two sandy beaches.
