A town of three harbours, two are still well used today. The oldest, Cromwell Harbour, was named so because Oliver Cromwell's army used it as a base for supplies during the Battle of Dunbar in 1650. Its main trade included grain and timber and it was a sizeable fishing port in the early 18th century. In 1842, Victoria Harbour was built as a base for the herring fleet and, by 1948, there were 26 boats used in white and shell fishing with an income of £21,000. Originally constructed to prevent attack from privateers, the former fortified artillery Battery is now a public garden and performance space. Dunbar is also home to one of the largest lifeboat stations in the area. From the harbour, you can view the remains of Dunbar Castle, one of the strongest fortresses in Scotland.
