Nature & Wildlife Itinerary

A rich and varied landscape; from the rugged coastline to the high moorland of the Lammermuir Hills. East Lothian is a coast and countryside paradise on Edinburgh’s doorstep, offering great wildlife diversity and is particularly well known for its marine and birdlife including the largest northern gannet population on the Bass Rock. There’s panoramic breathtaking views in every direction and wide open spaces for all to enjoy. Famous Scot, John Muir, renowned naturalist and founder of the National Parks in America, sets the scene and opportunities abound to follow in his footsteps round Scotland including some time on the John Muir Way. “When I was a child in Scotland, I was fond of everything that was wild, and all my life I’ve been growing fonder and fonder of wild places and wild creatures. Fortunately, around my native town of Dunbar, by the stormy North Sea, there was no lack of wildness...” Unique to the area are the Exmoor ponies roaming wild on Traprain Law , a distinct hill close by Haddington and on Berwick Law in North Berwick, both being outstanding volcanic features of the region. Amazing seabirds including the gannets and the cormorants, harbour seals and the noisy kittiwakes nesting at Dunbar Castle are to be seen and in autumn, 30,000 pink footed geese migrate to East Lothian shores. Puffins and often dolphins and porpoises can delight our visitors on boat trips. Nature and Wildlife visiteastlothian.org TRADE TRAVEL Love East Lothian The Bass Rock
